Event Description

The New Parish, myKinfolkz.com and SanfokaEvents.com are excited to announce The Seshen, Con Brio and Bells Oct. 19th, 2012 concert hosted by Kinfolkz at the New Parish in Oakland, California. The New Parish, a popular intimate Oakland venue, books nationally known bands, comedians and Bay Area based artists that have local appeal. Since it's January 2010 opening, acts like Mos Def, Dave Chappelle, Meshell Ndegeocello, Goapele, Lauryn Hill, Ra Ra Riot, Kid Sister, and Elephant Man have performed on The New Parish’s stage. You can now add The Seshen, Con Brio and Bells to the list of distinguished artists that have been invited to the grace this favored space.

THE SESHEN
The Seshen
The Seshen is a 7-piece Bay Area-based band whose songs mix live and electronic elements. Their music utilizes electronic textures to suggest complex emotions and vivid imagery but also to blur the distinction between the abstract and the familiar. The Seshen takes influences from electronic music, hip-hop, pop, R&B, dub, and indie rock to create beat-driven compositions with a strong emotional core. The band consists of bassist/producer Aki Ehara, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboardist Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and synchronizer/sampler Kumar Butler, who provide the sonic backdrop for vocalists Lalin St. Juste and Akasha Orr. Songs are created and performed by bassist/producer Aki Ehara, drummer Julian Pont, keyboardist Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and synchronizer/sampler Kumar Butler. Driving beats laced with Afro-Caribbean percussion, thick bass lines, rich keyboards and textured electronic sampling provide the foundation for lyricists Lalin St. Juste and Akasha Orr, whose dreamy vocals create an ethereal sonic landscape.
CON BRIO
Con Brio
Powered by the strikingly soulful vocals of Xandra Corpora, San Francisco's Con Brio ("with vigor, or spirit") blends old-school grit with new-school sophistication for a sound that's wholly their own. The instrumentation is timeless: saxophone and trumpet roll over thick organ grooves while electric guitar, upright bass and drums keep heads nodding and the dance floor moving. A lesser singer could be forgiven for getting lost in the mix, but Corpora stands out. Her rich and powerful voice is the first thing to grab you, but it is the raw honesty and sincerity of the lyrics that stay with you long after the club goes dark or the record stops spinning.

BELLS
Bells
Blending heavy percussion, soulful vocal harmonies, and thoughtful arrangements Bells has arrived at a sound that is uniquely theirs. Although they are a new group, they are quickly drawing an audience with diverse musical tastes. Birthed from the imaginations of singer-percussionist Sandra Lawson-Ndu, and bassist-singer Doug Stuart, the songs are brought to life with the help of Derek Barber on guitar and vocals, and Geneva Harrison on drums, percussion, and vibes. They are in the process of recording their first studio album, but have been raising eyebrows with their three home recorded demos.
