Event Description

The Land Trio uses Tabla, Kamanche, Charango, Coco-banjo, Requinto Jarocho and Guitar. The musicians gathered in The Land Trio come from different cultures and various latitudes, and so does the music they play. Based on the idea that communication is able to free music from cultural and national frames, The Land Trio mixes instruments that come from different traditions, allowing them to play together and to find new ways of communication through sound while keeping their traditional idiom.

Saba Alizadeh

Born in 1983 Iran, Saba is both a Musician and a Photographer. As son of Hossein Alizadeh (world-renowned Persian composer/performer) Saba grew up in a deeply musical atmosphere. In addition, he has received training on his instrument, The Kamancheh (persian spike fiddle) at the hands of the renowned master Kayhan Kalhor. Saba is a member of the critically acclaimed Hamavayan ensemble (new interpretations of classical Persian music) as well as the Nour ensemble (combination of the classical Persian and European music). Saba has toured extensively in the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Canada. He has played in such prestigious venues worldwide as the Carnegie Hall and Royce Hall. Saba has an impressive discography to his credit, with more than a dozen recordings, including work on the internationally acclaimed movie “Turtles can fly”. Currently, Saba is pursuing a Masters degree in Composition (Experimental Sound Practices) at the California Institute for the Arts, in Los Angeles California. Saba holds of a BFA degree in photography as well, and has shown his works internationally to much acclaim. His works have been shown in such diverse locations as San Francisco, Paris, Kuwait and Tehran. Most recently he had a solo exhibition in Tehran, which drew such accolades as “… Alizadeh ‘s images are irresistible, poetic, yet
true…” -Shargh newspaperand Canada.

Jxel Rajchenberg

I’m a mexican musician who likes to walk. Curiosity is leading the boat, there’s no plan, there’s only wandering. My art making is pedestrian, most of my composing happens on a bicycle, in a cup of coffee or surrounded by my people. I try to learn from every culture, every instrument. I am amazed by the richness of the world. I make mexican music that sometimes blends with computers, some others with instruments coming from other latitudes, sometimes with contemporary music, sometimes with dance. I am studying for my Doctorate of Arts degree at CalArts as a composer and a performer.

Javad Butah

A disciple of world-renowned Tabla master Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Javad’s comprehensive approach to the instrument reflects his training at the hands of one of the finest Tabla artists alive today. In addition to his impressive technique, Javad’s overall musicality, expressed equally in solo performance and accompaniment, leaves a lasting impression on listeners and has made him an in-demand young artist. Javad is amongst a few who have had the rare honor of becoming an official “gandabandh” disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. He has had the honor of accompanying world-renowned artists such as Ustad Aashish Khan and Ustad Sultan Khan. He has played in such venues worldwide as the Peter Norton Symphony Space in New York, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Saptak Music Festival in Ahmedabad, India. Recently, Javad earned a graduate degree under the tutelage and guidance of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, eminent exponent of the Lucknow Gharana, at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, CA. With a deep love for the inexhaustible art of tabla, Javad is always continuing to learn and develop. His playing, noteworthy for its clarity and fine sound quality, represents a virtuosic tradition alive in a new generation.
