"BLACK TO THE MISSION!!!"

Three San Francisco bands, which include REAL LIFE SAN FRANCISCO NATIVES(!) as well as long-time residents, will be gathering their forces for a Programme of Diverse Black Music at The Chapel in San Francisco's Mission District on Friday, April 4th.

In this time of ever-gentrifying neighborhoods and stories of artists and others being forced to leave the area, the Mission has stood as the exemplar for re-fashioning a commmunity. It stands head and shoulders above the rest of the City when it comes to soaring rents, rapid changeover of area demographics, and many, many, many new restaurants. Especially Valencia Street.

Add to this general gentrification the fact that, according to the 2010 census, African-Americans make up 6.1 percent of the population of S.F. (down from 13.4 in 1970), and, well, we can attest that Black music (as performed by Black people) does not have the same opportunities to be heard as it once may have. Especially on Valencia Street.

Which partly explains why this show is so special. It's Black Music of many types. It's on Valencia Street (just up the road from Amnesia.) And the bands consist largely of longtime San Francisco residents and natives who, due to a combination of day-jobs, rent control, perseverance, and luck, have managed to hang on, hang in, and continue to create Diverse Black Music.
