Known for her signature chanting style, Sister Carol is one of the most enduring female reggae artists over the last 40 years. An electrifying, Grammy-nominated performer, she is affectionately known as "Mother Culture" and "The Black Cinderella," which is also the name of her record label.

Born Carol Theresa East, in Kingston, Jamaica, Sister Carol was 14 when her family immigrated to Brooklyn, New York. After receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from City College in New York, she set out on her musical career. Around the same time, she met Brigadier Jerry, a Jamaican DJ who encouraged her to try chatting in Jamaican dancehall style, rather than singing. After winning competitions in New York and Jamaica, Sister Carol toured with The Meditations. In the past forty years, she has produced nineteen albums full of heartfelt conscious roots, and has toured the globe. Her recent collaborations include “World Needs Love” with Marcia Griffiths, and “My Jamaica” with Nakeeba Amaniyea. In addition to her musical career, Sister Carol has appeared in several movies, directed by the late Jonathan Demme, including Something Wild, Married to the Mob, Rachel’s Getting Married, and Ricki And The Flash. She has raised four children, and has twelve grandchildren, and lives in Jamaica.
