Event Description

In celebration of International Women’s Month, La Peña Cultural Center, in partnership with Transnational Institute for Grassroots Research and Action (TIGRA), present Tres Marias!

Tres Marias features a trio of internationally-renowned women musicians including Cynthia Alexander, Radmila Cody and Diana Gameros. Honoring the love, sacrifice and role of women in migration and economic development. The three featured artists of Tres Marias seek to explore the intersections of their personal histories in conjunction with international migrant struggles.

Tres Marias are:
Diana Gameros is a Latin singer/songwriter who performs songs of love, longing, and hope. Originally from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and now living in San Francisco, Gameros creates authentic, inspiring music that reflects the 21st century experiences of a young indie artist at the borderlands between cultures, languages, and genres. Whether teasing every ounce of expression from her acoustic guitar in an intimate cafe or bringing people to their feet in a club with her dynamic full band, Gameros transfixes listeners with her soaring vocals, impressive playing and captivating stage presence. http://dianagameros.com/

Radmilla Cody is a GRAMMY Nominee, an award winning Native American Recording Artist, an international performer, former Miss Navajo Nation, and an advocate against domestic abuse and violence. Miss Cody is of the Tla’a’schi’i’(Red Bottom People) clan and is born for the Naahilii (African-Americans). She is the subject of an award winning documentary entitled “Hearing Radmilla”, produced and directed by Angela Webb, which further explores Radmilla’s journey as an activist and performer. Radmilla holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations with a minor in Sociology and is currently pursuing her Masters in Sociology. In 2010, Radmilla was selected for NPR’s 50 Great Voices, a yearlong series featuring singers from all over the world. Recently, Radmilla was awarded the “Black History Makers Award 2012” from Initiative Radio. http://www.radmillacody.net/

Cynthia Alexander is a singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist highly regarded in her native Philippines, who currently lives in Seattle, Washington. As an independent artist, she has released four award-winning albums and is involved in a wide variety of musical projects ranging from film scores to sound installations. Most recently, she composed the eclectic musical score for the highly acclaimed Ballet Philippines production Pusong Wagas, for which she fused electronic, industrial, indigenous, contemporary and pop elements into a cohesive musical narrative. http://www.reverbnation.com/cynthialexander
