For our 21st anniversary, we bring back 1993 with a series of 93-second interviews with Bay Area artists remembering that seminal year in the evolution of hip hop.
Clas/sick Hip Hop: 1993 Edition reimagines the catalog of one of hip hop's most commercially and artistically successful years: 1993. In that year, OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Dogg, Wu Tang Clan, and Tupac Shakur all released seminal music that recalibrated the sonic possibilities of the entire genre. 1993 was also the year that YBCA opened its doors with a mission to celebrate both the Bay Area's local prowess and the globe's contemporary aesthetic vision. Combining these impulses, Clas/sick Hip Hop challenges more than 15 local MCs to recreate the hip-hop catalog of 1993, backed on two different stages by two of the Bay Area's foremost young composers, JooWan Kim performing with his chamber orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj and Oakland's own Kev Choice, Lauryn Hill's former musical director, performing with the 11-piece Kev Choice Ensemble.
Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) presents the world premiere of a six-piece YBCA commission in which EMN music director, composer/pianist JooWan Kim, re-imagines six classic hip-hop songs from 1993 with his group, including C.R.E.A.M., Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta Fuck Wit, and Shame On A Nigga from the Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) album by Wu-Tang Clan; as well as Gin and Juice, Gz and Hustlas, and Who Am I (What's My Name)? from the Doggystyle album by Snoop Dogg.
Kev Choice Ensemble pays homage and tribute to the incredible catalogue of hip-hop music that came out in the year of 1993. The focus will be on the classic songs, albums, influences and samples that were the foundation in the creation of these songs.
