With all of the ongoing Dilla Day send-ups and celebrations, it may have been overlooked that another late production legend was also celebrating a birthday. Seems hard to imagine that two pioneers — James Yancey and Japanese lo-fi originator, Jun Seba, better known to most as Nujabes — were born on the exact same day. But it’s just as difficult to conceive a current state of sample-based production without equal consideration for both of their catalogs.
That in mind, the Altered Crates mash-up conglomerate has relinquished a new project, blending b-side instrumentals from the late Japanese producer and a batch of unreleased MF DOOM bars on the Metaphorical Villainy mixtape. Standing 11 tracks tall, the project is a towering salute to the missing link between Dilla and the generation of listeners who discovered his music through a 24-hour Youtube playlist while tucked into some hidden recess of their local library.
Hear MF DOOM bars blaze Nujabes instrumentals on Altered Crates’ Metaphorical Villainy mash-up below. Head over to the Bandcamp page to comb through the archive.
