Let’s keep it real: October’s BET Hip Hop Awards are the red-headed stepchild to its Los Angeles equivalent in June. We just watch them now for the cyphers, and those haven’t really been that great in a while either.
Alas, the 2019 installment aired tonight (Oct. 8), and not only were there fewer cyphers than before but a “live hip hop battle” on stage in its place somewhat. I mean, Chance The Rapper and Rapsody were among the other performers (sadly, Chano didn’t do the “ooh I love my wiiiife” song), and there was a rather-deserved Lil Kim tribute, but I honestly didn’t watch this live; I just waited for BET to put the entire thing up on their Youtube page.
