Twenty-five years ago, Common, still a young MC at the time, dropped “I Used to Love H.E.R.” his iconic ode to hip-hop. In 1999, The Roots released their classic album Things Fall Apart. On that album is “Act Too (Love of My Life),” the sequel, which features Common and Black Thought rapping about hip-hop’s progression (or lack of) at the time.
Now we have the third song in the trilogy. Common has just released “HER Love,” his latest ode to hip-hop. The song features Daniel Caesar on the hook and production from J. Dilla. (During an album listening session last month, Common said he was reluctant to use J. Dilla production.)
While “I Used to Love Her” and “Act Too” were both critical of the direction hip-hop was going, “HER Love” features Common being more accepting.
