http://www.democracynow.org - The Obama administration has acknowledged it had advance notice British officials were going to detain David Miranda, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who has revealed the National Security Agency's massive spy practices. Miranda was held Sunday at London's Heathrow Airport under Section 7 of the British Terrorism Act for nine hours -- the maximum time he could be detained without charge. Miranda has just announced legal action against the British Home Office for his detention. Meanwhile, The Guardian has revealed the British government threatened legal action against the newspaper unless it either destroyed Snowden's classified documents or handed them to British authorities. "At its core, what is at stake is the ability for a human being to have dignity and for journalists to have integrity with their sources, [threatening] the whole concept of a free democracy," says computer security researcher Jacob Appelbaum, who has been detained and questioned numerous times at airports. "And I don't mean that as hyperbole, but if everything is under surveillance, how is that you can have a democracy? How is it that you can organize a political function, or have confidentiality with a constituent, or a source, or with a friend or a lover? That's an erasure of fundamental things that we have had for quite some time." We're also joined by longtime British attorney Gareth Peirce.

http://www.democracynow.org - As Congress holds its second major public hearing on the National Security Agency's bulk spying, we speak with Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who first published whistleblower Edward Snowden's revelations. The NSA admitted their analysis of phone records and online behavior far exceeded what it had previously disclosed. "The fact that you now see members of both political parties increasingly angry over the fact that they were misled and lied to by top level Obama administration officials, that the laws that they enacted in the wake of 9/11 -- as broad as they were -- are being incredibly distorted by secret legal interpretations approved by secret courts, really indicates exactly that Snowden's motives to come forward with these revelations, at the expense of his liberty and even his life, were valid and compelling," Greenwald says. "If you think about whistleblowing in terms of people who expose things the government is hiding that they shouldn't be, in order to bring about reform, I think what you're seeing is the fruits of classic whistleblowing."

Glenn Greenwald: Snowden Encouraged by Global Outrage over NSA Spying, Support for His Plight

In part two of our interview from Monday, Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald details his conversation with National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden over the weekend. Greenwald says he spoke at length with Snowden for the first time since Snowden left Hong Kong last month. "He is enthused about the developments over the last week, both in terms of ongoing revelations and the ongoing debate that he helped trigger about surveillance policy worldwide, as well as the support that he's getting from around the world," Greenwald says. "He only had one fear, and that was that he would sacrifice his life and take these enormous personal risks in order to make these disclosures possible, and then have the world react with indifference and apathy." On why Snowden has chosen to become a whistleblower, Greenwald adds: "He began thinking the U.S. government was the most noble government in the world and wanted to work and devote his career to supporting its policies. And it was only over time, gradually, that he began seeing all sorts of things and thought critically about them, just like Bradley Manning did, who joined the U.S. military with the same thoughts and only gradually began to see it as a force for evil. That is Mr. Snowden's evolution."
