As part of the local initiative to rename King Street Larry Levan Way, the Red Bull Music Academy paid tribute to the legacy of Levan on May 11th, 2014 with a larger-than-life block party with Joey Llanos, David DePino and François K.

Through his legendary residency at New York’s Paradise Garage, Larry Levan elevated DJing to an artform and provided the soundtrack to one of the most fertile moments in the history of dance music. Levan’s sessions throughout the ’80s at the Garage were dubbed “Saturday Mass,” an acknowledgement that – to many – going to the club was a weekly ritual of the upmost importance.

Occupy Wall Street Anniversary Remembered In Shocking Video Of NYPD Arrests

One day before the two-year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, a new film sheds light on the NYPD's controversial treatment of protesters.

Created by activist Paul-Henri Sullivan and his brother Justin, the short documentary shows ten arrests over the course of 87 minutes during Occupy's first-anniversary march.

“On the eve of the second anniversary of OWS it bears remembering that the occupations didn’t simply fizzle and dissipate,” said Sullivan, according to The Sparrow Project. "This video, shot last year on the morning of the first anniversary, not only reminds us of how difficult it is to protest when the NYPD is determined to shut you down, but also how the NYPD continues to suppress civil liberties in order to stamp out the movement.”

Watch above as cops, led by a "white-shirt" captain, grab protesters from the sidewalks and handcuff them. Sullivan says cops deliberately created "the spectacle of arrest" in order to intimidate other protesters. 185 protesters were arrested during last year's anniversary march.

James Gandolfini, the celebrated actor best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano on the hit TV series, "The Sopranos," died Wednesday at the age of 51. While coverage of his death has focused mainly on his acting career, little has been mentioned about the more political side of his work. In New York City, he was a beloved figure not only because of his acting on the stage and screen, but also because of his major support for community media and producing documentaries critical of war. In 2010, he produced the HBO film "Wartorn: 1861-2010" about post-traumatic stress disorder from the Civil War to Iraq and Afghanistan. He also conducted a series of in-depth interviews with U.S. soldiers wounded in the Iraq War for a 2007 HBO film, "Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq." We speak to the films' co-directors, Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill.
