Climate scientist: The challenge ahead signals "new chapter" of human civilization

A new report published by Nature Communications on Tuesday reveals that coastal flooding due to climate change-induced sea level rise will likely reach levels three times higher than previous projections for 2050. Some 300 million people are at risk of displacement or death, and several major cities across Asia, including Bangkok and Jakarta, could be inundated entirely. "This is an entirely new problem in the course of human civilization," says Benjamin Strauss, CEO and chief scientist at Climate Central and co-author of the report. "I hope that with adequate warning, decades of warning, we have some chance of finding and investing resources to defend the places that we are able, but there is a great inequity of resources around the world. It is going to be very expensive." Harjeet Singh, the global lead on climate change at ActionAid, adds that the "environment now has to be at the center of everything that we are doing, how we're using our natural resources, how we are building our homes, how we are using water — all of that has to change."
