Three white men were found guilty of murder for the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man who was jogging near his home. That shooting, alongside the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, was a driving force behind the summer of protests that occurred during 2020.
The three defendants in the case were Gregory McMichael, 65; his son Travis, 35; and a neighbor William Bryan, 52. Travis was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony. Gregory and Bryan were both acquitted of the top charge, malice murder. All three are facing up to life in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been established.
The three are also facing separate federal hate crime charges. That trial is set to take place in February. If it goes through and they are found guilty — of a wide range of charges including interference with rights and attempted kidnapping — they could face an additional life in prison.
