Jussie Smollett was charged with felony disorderly conduct last month for allegedly staging a racist, anti-gay attack on himself, the case has spiraled into a complex and confusing saga.
According to a report in TMZ the “Empire” actor’s case has sparked Chicago PD to launch an internal investigation. The department’s Chief of Detectives reportedly opened the investigation out of concerns over information leaks, including “inaccurate” info leaked anonymously to media during the probe of Smollett’s claims.
“When there are allegations of information being leaked, an internal investigation has been opened and we are also looking at our vulnerabilities,” a police spokesman told TMZ.
According to a report in NBC, police spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi says no alleged leakers have been identified so far and no officers or staff members with the department have been disciplined for releasing information about the case.
Smollett’s attorney, Mark Geragos, appeared on CNN and charged the leaks were a thinly veiled attempt to discredit the actor.
