This past weekend (March 30) in Hollywood, California, the 50th NAACP Image Awards were held at the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. Winners from the event include Donald Glover (both for his FX series, Atlanta as well as his powerful music video for, “This Is America”), Bruno Mars for “Outstanding Male Artist,” H.E.R. for “Outstanding Female Artist,” and the Kendrick Lamar-led soundtrack, Black Panther: The Album. One of the ceremony’s most prestigious awards, The President’s Award, was given to JAY-Z.
In a statement released by the NAACP on Friday (March 29), association President Derrick Johnson discussed the importance of the award, and Jay’s role as 2019’s recipient. “The President’s Award is an honor we carefully bestow upon an individual, maintaining its significance and commitment to recognizing excellence in service that directly affects our community,” says Derrick Johnson, President of the NAACP. “Shawn Carter has been committed to shedding light on the issues that plague the Black community including systematic racism and unjust treatment under the law, utilizing his global platform to create everlasting change. There is no better time than now, as we celebrate our 50th year, to honor him with this award.”
