The entries in the dictionary cite the Detroit rapper’s 2000 song “Stan.”
Eminem‘s “Stan” gave rise to the term as people know it today, the 2000 hit song telling the story of an overzealous and maniacal fan of the Detroit rapper that ends tragically. Now, Eminem’s definition of the term has been added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
The dictionary has two entries for the rapper’s definition including a noun (“an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan”) and a verb (“to exhibit fandom to an extreme or excessive degree” or “to be an extremely devoted and enthusiastic fan of someone or something”), with the definitions categorized as “slang, often disparaging.” In the history and etymology for the term, the dictionary cites Em’s “Stan” for both its noun and verb entries, writing “from Stan, name of such a fan in the song ‘Stan’ (2000) by the American rap artist Eminem (Marshall Bruce Mathers III).”
