Titled “No Place Like Home,” the song was recorded around the same time as the last A Tribe Called Quest album, We Got It from Here…Thank You 4 Service. It’s produced by Consequence and Mike Cash, with additional production from Fede Vindver and Rich Keller.
“I always knew I wanted people to hear this record, but it just felt like the timing had to be right,” Consequence said in a statement via Pitchfork. “This year it feels right. The one thing I know about Phife is that he’s a rapper’s rapper. The best gift I could give him for his birthday this year is to let the world hear the ‘5 Foot Assassin’ once again!”
Phife passed away at the age of 45 on March 22, 2016. Earlier this year, Phife was honored with his very own day in Oakland, California.
Oakland declared May 17 “Phife Dawg Day” following an event that honored A Tribe Called Quest in San Francisco. Phife’s mother, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, his widow, Deisha Head Taylor, and producer Starita (who engineered We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service) were present at the event. The honoring was a part of a tribute event dubbed A Tribute To A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders.
