The viral rap duo Flyana Boss made up of rappers Bobbi Lanea Tyler and Folayan Omi Kunerede hail from Los Angeles, California. It may seem like these two popped up on the scene, but they have been hard at work as artists and creatives for many years. They first signed to Atlantic Records back in 2021 and their song “You Wish” gained momentum on social media this year.

Monáe shared some backstory on her new song ‘Lipstick Lover,’ which was released today (May 11).

“That song, Lipstick Lover, ugh. I’m like, “Why didn’t I write this song years ago?” Because if you know me… Today, I don’t have on any red lipstick, but I’m always in red lipstick. And there have been so many instances where I’ve made out with somebody at a party and it’s dark. Nobody notices it. But when the lights come on, whoever I’ve made out with, lipstick all over their face. And then I’ve also been on the receiving end of a human… who’s so attractive…. Or I’ll get home and I’m like, “Oh my God. I have lipstick all over my face.” And I’ve also been the Lipstick Lover where…You know exactly who I kissed.”

What happens when two of the most decorated rap producers link? Well, if it’s anything like the way Alchemist and Hit-Boy join forces, the answer may surprise you. For decades, the acclaimed sound sculptors have let their respective productions do the talking. But in an unexpected twist, their debut collaborative single finds them trading beats and bars.

Released over the weekend, “Slipping into Darkness” is nearly five minutes of the producers offering rare writtens over one another’s suites. The song, which was teased late last week in a pair of posts from the producers, commences with Uncle Al running the math on his outfits over a ghostly soul chop from the King’s Disease producer. On the back half of the track, the duo switch roles and Hit-Boy takes an ivory-soaked loop from Alchemist for a stroll, reflecting on his come-up and how one-dimensional many of his contemporaries have become.

“Slipping into Darkness” arrives as an unforeseen pitstop for the acclaimed producers. For the last few months, Alchemist has been readying the release of an upcoming joint project with Bay Area rapper, Larry June. Their album, The Great Escape, is set to drop on March 31st via ALC Records and Empire. Meanwhile, Hit-Boy, who just dropped a collaborative project with Musiq Soulchild last week, has been on a wild run with Nas, producing all three volumes of the Queensbridge rapper’s King’s Disease, one of which took home a Grammy for “Best Rap Album” in 2021.

Dallas and Philadelphia collide on new The Roots song, “Misunderstood.” On Thursday night, Funk Flex of Hot 97 premiered the track, which features neo-soul pioneer Erykah Badu and eccentric rapper Tierra Whack. “Misunderstood” comes one week after Funk Flex called out The Roots to deliver new music.

“I challenged The Roots last week, and they delivered big time,” Flex declared on-air, praising the song produced by Questlove and Jorun Bombay. “The knock on this is crazy … This is so mean.”

Right now, the once-dominant and now-reunited boy band New Kids On The Block are the kings of the nostalgia circuit. This summer, the New Kids will hit arenas across America on their second Mixtape Tour, and the bill will also feature late-’80s and early-’90s stars Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue, and Rick Astley. (Presumably, the inclusion of both Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue means that we’ll get a “Whatta Man” performance every night, which sounds fun.) Today, the New Kids have rounded up all those Mixtape Tour acts for a new single and, more importantly, a new video.

New Kid Donnie Wahlberg co-wrote and co-produced the new single “Bring Back The Time,” an uptempo dance-pop track that’s all about nostalgia. The song mostly serves as an excuse for the video to exist. In the John Asher-directed clip, all of those artists re-create scenes from a bunch of classic early-MTV videos: “Separate Ways,” “Whip It,” “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” “Rebel Yell,” “Addicted To Love,” “Mickey,” “Vogue,” etc. (Most of those clips predate the era when the New Kids and their collaborators were stars, but this is about vibe, not historical accuracy.)

The humor here is low-hanging fruit, but, I mean, it’s definitely fun to see the circa-2022 New Kids On The Block wearing Devo flowerpots and Twisted Sister wigs. These guys know that their audience wants a specific thing, and they are going to supply that thing.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">DETROIT – After going viral with his rewrite of Lukas Graham’s “7 Years,” JonPaul Wallace has silenced any critics who muttered the phrase, “one-hit-wonder.” While Wallace’s graduation performance of Graham’s hit accumulated more than 20 million views across streaming platforms, Wallace has taken the popularity in stride, focusing on the future.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">“Honestly, it was completely unexpected,” said JonPaul Wallace. “I wanted to cover the song, but it says, 20 years, and I was only seventeen at the time. So, I changed up the lyrics to make it more suitable to me.”

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">With a discography of cover songs, each with his take on it, Wallace is now focusing on songwriting and performing. His latest single, “Love’s Not for Everyone,” displays the Michigan native’s abilities to blend pop and soulful rhythms.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">In the slow and heavy melodic vocal tune, Wallace captures the feeling when a relationship ends. Instead of wallowing in the heartache, “Love’s Not for Everyone” is a declaration of acceptance and loneliness that comes after ending a relationship. The ballad which drops in December represents the softer side of Wallace’s contemporary pop style.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">“I definitely pull a lot of inspiration from Motown and old soul music and put that in there, especially with a lot of my background vocals and vocal performances,” he explained. “There’s a lot of old soul influence in what I do. It’s something about growing up around Detroit. Soul is ingrained in me.”

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">Interestingly, Wallace did not write “Love’s Not for Everyone” in just one settling. After spending a few days in Northern Michigan on a solo writing trip, Wallace drove home when inspiration struck. “On my drive home, I was on I-75. I actually have a voice memo of me working on what became the bridge of ‘Love’s Not for Everyone,’” he said.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">Even though the bridge was done, he put it aside to work on other songs with faster beats and more dance-like tracks. However, something was nagging at him to finish the piece. So, in typical Wallace style, he stepped away from the up-tempo songs and finished “Love’s Not for Everyone.”

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">“Lyrically, nothing changed. It was almost like a first try in the studio,” he said, knowing that the song was perfect for him and his fans.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">With a finance and marketing degree from Oakland University, Wallace focuses full-time on being a singer, songwriter, and performer. “When I’m on stage, I’m always behind a guitar or piano. I just have a lot of fun on stage. I don’t try to be too heavy. I want to make music that takes you where you can forget about everything for a little while,” he said.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">While “Love’s Not for Everyone” is a departure from Wallace’s typical upbeat pop songs, it showcases his versatility and strength as a singer and songwriter. Taking a few cues from the legendary Stevie Wonder and Billie Eilish, Wallace said, “My original music brings a different sound to the table. It’s focused on background vocals in a soulful way. But a lot of the production and melodies come from a modern and contemporary pop-dance style. It’s pretty different from what’s out there now. It’s what I do best.”

<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 1.08333em; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">

‘I’m A Hashole’ Reveals the Real Wowashwow

LOS ANGELES - Singer, songwriter, entertainer, activist, and social media influencer are words used to describe Wowashwow, but her latest album, “I’m A Hashole,” reveals the real woman behind the titles.

“This album is a full representation of who I am and not a representation of what I think people want me to be,” she explained.

A combination of hip hop and mainstream pop, the nine-track album slated to be released on Nov. 26 is a creative masterpiece of the artist known for her legendary music videos, performances, and body-shaking beats.

In true Wowashwow style, she describes “I’m A Hashole” as “shit that you can shake your ass off to when you listen to this album. I create music that not only makes me happy, makes me want to dance, and makes me want to feel good, but when someone else listens to it, they can shake their motherf*ckin’ ass.”

The first single off “I’m A Hashole” is “PU$$I Power.” “The whole song is about an attitude and way of life,” she said, describing the song that is not just about female genitalia but a way of life - that is confident, positive, and ready to hustle. “PU$$I is an attitude like if you’re a bad bitch, which can be a woman, man, or gender fluid person.”

The Queen of Making Bops is currently working on the “PU$$I Power” music video, which will be released at the end of 2021 or early 2022. It is sure to be epic!

Switching gears and toning down the tempo, the album single, “Eyes Wide Shut,” pays homage to the South Jersey/Philadelphia native’s rock ‘n roll roots and harkens back to when she was lead singer and guitarist in a punk rock band. Beyond the song’s hard-driving beats and multiple vocal ranges, its message is clear. “It’s a song about letting people know that you’re here and that you cannot push me away from my goals, my dreams, my aspirations, (and) the things that I want. Even with my eyes shut, I can see through all the bullshit, and I keep pushing forward.”

Overall, “I’m A Hashole” is an upbeat hip-hop album representing the best of Wowashwow. Staying true to herself and keeping it real, all the lyrics were all composed by Wowashwow. The album was created using live instrumentation and without autotune. Whether it is booming vocals, freestyling raps, ass shaking jams, “I’m A Hashole” is pure perfection - pure Wowashwow.

As much as Wowashwow loves music, she is an activist for the Cannabis industry and uses her platform to remove the stigma associated with it. Using her trademark sarcasm for the album’s title, nothing is sarcastic about her passion for the Cannabis industry. In addition to headlining Cannabis conventions and expos, she is a 2022 Orange County Cannabis Award Musician of the Year nominee, an honor she does not take for granted. “I’m as passionate about the Cannabis industry as much as I am about music,” she said.

With roots dedicated to the stoners and the body-positive community, Wowashwow said, “I’m 100% me, and I bring those weird and awkward energies to the stage. There’s this connotation that when I get on stage and I’m just going to stand and be in one single spot, (and) not move around - then I go running across the stage and ten-inch platforms, like Mick Jagger. I have an entire seven-piece live band behind me with dancers and everything. It’s a vibe, and I love it. It’s real music. Honestly, the album’s f*cking fire; it’s a really good album.”

It’s such a universal language; you can touch so many people even if they don’t speak your language.

While some refer to love as only romantic, Darshania says the song “explores the depth of love between a mother and her child, and her partner. It explores the love between the ocean, the love with nature, and having a love for ritual and an understanding how important that is to keep that going and your life to be connected to the Earth.

I wrote that song when I was living in a bad place with a bunch of roaches everywhere. I literally went downstairs in the studio of that place and recorded that song myself, and it was me wanting to create my future and speaking to myself. But it also was empowerment to remember that your mental, physical, and spiritual health are more valuable than anything else that you have.”

That journey is about tapping into that frequency of your heart and in my spiritual practice. It is believed that the heart, rather than the brain is the source of human wisdom,” explained Darshania.

We are not progressing by sharing bad messages, disrespecting our women or brothers, or sharing anything involving violence and killing. That’s just killing our people. It’s time for evolution to step forward and step through because love is what’s going to lead the way.”
