Despite some overlap in their respective periods of prominence, Musiq Soulchild and J Dilla never had the opportunity to work together prior to the producer’s death in 2006.

But on his latest release, Dewitt4Dilla, Soulchild offers a snapshot of what a full-fledged collaborative project with the Detroit legend might have sounded like. Far from a mash-up, the five-track tape bridges generations of r&b by repurposing a grip of the producer’s instrumentals for covers of classics from Marvin Gaye, Prince, Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder. The result is a butter-smooth blend of Motor City swing and timeless soul.

The project follows last year’s release of two new albums from Soulchild; the gospel-tinged, Set Apart, and the straight-ahead r&b collection, Sobeautiful.

On the heels of last week’s MF DOOM x Nujabes drop, the mash-up maestro returns with a potent pairing of Griselda’s Benny The Butcher and the late J Dilla on his new Butcherin’ Donuts tape. Though it doesn’t actually feature any instrumentals from the Detroit producer’s 2006 magnum opus, Crates combs through all eras of back-alley collections, offering the brooding Buffalo MC a suite of varying chops and swing levels in a seamless stitch-up, with guest appearances from some of rap’s finest.

The nine-track tape marks a muscular, though unofficial, follow-up to three years of consistently stellar projects from Benny and the Griselda crew, not-so-quietly gaining steam as one of the most sought after squads in rap.

With all of the ongoing Dilla Day send-ups and celebrations, it may have been overlooked that another late production legend was also celebrating a birthday. Seems hard to imagine that two pioneers — James Yancey and Japanese lo-fi originator, Jun Seba, better known to most as Nujabes — were born on the exact same day. But it’s just as difficult to conceive a current state of sample-based production without equal consideration for both of their catalogs.

That in mind, the Altered Crates mash-up conglomerate has relinquished a new project, blending b-side instrumentals from the late Japanese producer and a batch of unreleased MF DOOM bars on the Metaphorical Villainy mixtape. Standing 11 tracks tall, the project is a towering salute to the missing link between Dilla and the generation of listeners who discovered his music through a 24-hour Youtube playlist while tucked into some hidden recess of their local library.

Dropped on Bandcamp via Altered Crates, Not Dead pairs two icons, Tupac and Jimi Hendrix, in a cross-generational, era-defying suite. The surgical six-track tape stitches classic Pac barbs and excerpts from interviews with the late rapper into ace chops of Hendrix’s iconic six-string assault. It follows a year of sporadic releases, mostly in batches of instrumentals or loosies posted to Soundcloud.

Enter The Dark Side of the Wu, the Wu-Tang Pink Floyd mashup EP you never knew you needed. The combo concept piece, created by PIZTRUMENTALS, has been up on the DJ’s SoundCloud for half a decade. However, it recently got a boost when it was featured as a revived release by Altered Crates. Whether you’re just hearing about it now or you’ve been on the Dark Side of the Wu train since 2014, a run through the 24ish-minute mixtape is guaranteed to make your day just a little better.

In a collaboration with Soles of Mischief and The Flyer Vault, Toronto-based DJ Filthy Rich has dropped his latest tribute mix. In honor of the 20th anniversary of Yasiin Bey’s debut solo album, Black on Both Sides, the mix features album tracks, loosies, and the samples used for the album’s production.

“I had to put out this mixtape in tribute to one of the most influential albums in my life,” Filthy Rich said on YouTube. “In 1999 when the jiggy era of hip hop was reigning, Rawkus Records and Mighty Mos were carrying the torch for that real underground hip hop sound. This classic LP covered a wide range of topics including the global water crisis, the shady music industry, love, police harassment, and even an ode to his parents.”

Twenty-five years ago today (April 19), Nas released the album that future generations will likely use to measure Rap greatness. At the age of 20, Nasir Jones delivered Illmatic, a 10-track coming of age reflection that pulled images from Rotten Apple-era New York City, emphasized dreams of being a Rap king, and properly introduced one of the coolestREAD MORE characters ever to grip a microphone.

Wax Poetics, Who Sampled, and DJ Chris Read celebrate Illmatic‘s birthday with care and style like no other, and they do so in audio. This 39-minute mix (the same length as the Columbia/Sony Records release) stands in a class of its own with effort, research, and understanding. Chris gives Nas’ debut all of its roses. The mix features interview clips with Nas, DJ Premier, and executive producer/A&R Faith Newman. Taking carefully chosen turns, the mix reconstructs and deconstructs an undeniably classic release in a way that is informative and pleasing to the ears at once.
