On April 25, 2015, the small, impoverished Himalayan nation of Nepal was hit with the biggest earthquake it has suffered in 80 years, somewhere between 7.8 and 8.1 on the Richter scale. There have been over 50 aftershocks so far, some over 6.0.  To date, the confirmed death toll is above 7,000 but many estimate it could reach 10,000 and higher.  The quake affected 8 million people across 39 districts. Huge numbers of families have been displaced, houses destroyed and some villages practically wiped out.  As is the case with earthquakes, the danger for increased disease, such as cholera, is very high in the weeks following. In addition to the human cost, many of Nepal important national heritage places, landmarks and famous temples were damaged or destroyed.
