Certain events have “The Bay” written all over them. Such is the case with this mega-showcase co-produced by Quannum, Def Jux, Tastemaker and Crown City Rockers on Tuesday July 1st at San Francisco's DNA Lounge. Too rare to miss, too powerful to contain, the entire evening is full of live performances by the movers & shakers from the Bay's burgeoning hip hop community.

In their San Francisco debut, the Mighty Underdogs boast three all star members; Headnodic (Crown City Rockers), Lateef the Truth Speaker (Latryx) and Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) collaboration is so fluid, it just might hurt other people's feelings when their album “Dropping Science Fiction” is released on Def Jux later this year. Raashan Ahmad, the versatile emcee who fronts (live hip hop band) Crown City Rockers with panache, uses the night to celebrate his first, full length solo release. “The Push” (Om Records) has already enjoyed much success, and with rave reviews and features on I-Tunes, Raashan should be well on his way to critical acclaim.

As if the night wasn't full enough, add in live performances by Joyo Velarde (the Quannum soultress), Kat O1O (Crown City Rocker's resident prodigy), special guest appearance by Chief X-Cel, DJ E Da Boss on the decks and guest host Lyrics Born. No mistake about, this is the crem de la crem of Bay Area's indie hip hop stars.

Cole Lumpkin Moves With the Music, Letting Life Shape Every Note

Cole Lumpkin doesn’t create from a distance. He creates from inside the moment. As a New York City native, his artistry reflects motion, curiosity, and constant self-interrogation. Music for Lumpkin isn’t something you step into once everything is figured out. It’s something you carry with you, refine on the move, and allow to grow alongside real life. A self-taught…See More

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
