Michaela Coel and Donald Glover had an interesting conversation for GQ.
In the most recent issue of Great Britain’s GQ, Donald Glover and Michaela Coel joined each other on a Zoom call for a special conversation. The two discussed the COVID-19 pandemic, the thought processes behind some of their most famous works, and more.
Donald Glover spoke at length about parenting. The 37-year-old has a four-year-old son, Legend, and just recently welcomed a baby boy, Drake, into the world. Unfortunately, the timing coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the viral video of George Floyd being killed by Minneapolis police.
“It was nuts,” Glover said,” I was in the hospital bed. My son had just been born, like, an hour before and I was watching the George Floyd video. It was such a weird moment…because I’m watching that video and it’s like eight minutes long, so you’re sitting there and I had just had this amazing, joyful, expanding moment, plus my dad had passed away recently, so [my son] was named after my father… I don’t even know what, really, the word is to describe it. It was just expanding: the empathy and compassion and the terror and the joy of it.”
