The wheels are reportedly in motion to include breaking as one of four new sports at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The announcement of Hip-Hop’s most physical element’s inclusion is slated to be revealed by the local organizing committee (OCOG) on Thursday (February 21). The Associated Press confirms the report. Joining the sports of climbing, surfing, and skateboarding, breakin’ is a crucial step closer to being included among the 28 games already a part of the Summer Olympics.
A couple of the sport’s greats reacted to the exciting news. Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew posted on Instagram what looks like the official announcement video of breaking’s inclusion in the 2024 Olympics. “From the #BRONX to the WORLD, #breaking is ALMOST officially part of the @paris2024 Olympics!!! This is historic! It’s here,” he captioned the video.
Before today’s latest development, Crazy Legs posted a flyer about the announcement and some more news. According to the veteran star dancer also known as Richard Colón, the IOC Executive Board will consider breakdancing among the other sports. If the EB approves the proposal next month, the American-born sport/artform will then be submitted to the IOC for final approval during meetings in Lausanne, Switzerland from June 24-26.
