Jeezy Criticizes Rappers Promoting Opioid Use

“I’ve been on a lot of ‘Pac,” Jeezy tells MASS APPEAL on the latest episode of “Open Space.” “Lately, I find myself wanting to hear from somebody like-minded. When it comes to life, and being rebellious, and being a rebel, I feel like I can relate to Tupac in so many ways. Because he was ahead of his time, a lot of the things he said then still matter now.”

Jeezy is in a pensive mood, and considering the roller-coaster year we’ve endured, it’s perfectly understandable. Over the last few years, the Atlanta rapper has been especially active, releasing full-length albums in 2014 ('Seen It All'), 2015 ('Church In the Streets') and 2016 ('Trap or Die 3'), each of which was crafted conceptually. He’s always in thinking mode.

Such is evidenced by 'Pressure', Jeezy’s eighth studio album and only project of 2017. “Diamonds come from coal,” says the “American Dream” rapper, explaining his minimal album artwork: the image of a sizable diamond. “But that comes from a lot of pressure and a lot of things on top of it to make it come out, and when it comes out, it’s shining. You can’t just crush a diamond with a rock. It’s hard, it’s tough. But it’s bright.”

“And that’s me.”

'Pressure' is an album that quickly tours some of the best pockets Jeezy has enjoyed throughout his career. The J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar collaboration, “American Dream,” recalls 'The Recession' in its in-your-face social commentary; the Vinylz-produced “This Is It” has a bounce akin to Jeezy’s early 'Trap or Die' work. Perhaps, the ability to canvas several years of style-switches is a bit of Jeezy wisdom in itself.

A new report on the devastating harm of policies that criminalize the personal use and possession of drugs finds that in 2015 police booked more people for small-time marijuana charges than for murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault combined. The report also showed African-American adults are more than two-and-a-half times as likely as white adults to be arrested for drug possession despite comparable rates of drug usage. This comes as four states have legalized recreational marijuana use and five more will vote to do the same next month. Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union released the findings Wednesday with a call for states and the federal government to decriminalize low-level drug offenses. We speak with Tess Borden, author of the report "Every 25 Seconds: The Human Toll of Criminalizing Drug Use in the United States."

Militarized Local Police Tap Post-9/11 Federal Grants to Stockpile Combat Gear, Use Drones

www.democracynow.org — A new report by the Center for Investigative Reporting reveals that since 9/11, local law enforcement agencies have used $34 billion in federal grants to acquire military equipment such as bomb-detection robots, digital communications equipment and Kevlar helmets. "A lot of these technologies and devices have been around for a long time. But as soon as they have a law enforcement capability, that is a game changer," says George Schulz, with the Center for Investigative Reporting. "The courts and the public have to ask, 'How is the technology being used by a community of people — the police — who are endowed with more power than the rest of us?'" Local police departments have also added drones to their tool kit. In June, a drone helped local police in North Dakota with surveillance leading to what may be the first domestic arrests with help from a drone. The American Civil Liberties Union has issued a new report that calls on the government to put establish privacy protections for surveillance by unmanned aerial drones, especially of people engaged in protests. "We believe that people should not be targeted for surveillance via drones just because they are they are engaged in First Amendment protected activity," says Catherine Crump, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.
