Supreme Court Strikes Down Affirmative Action in Colleges But Keeps It for Military Academies

The conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court has declared race-conscious admissions policies at colleges and universities across the country to be unlawful, effectively ending affirmative action in education. The landmark 6-3 ruling was along ideological lines and strikes down decades of precedent, but stops short of banning legacy admissions and allows military academies to continue using affirmative action. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the court, assailed the majority's "let-them-eat-cake obliviousness" to questions of racism and equity. We host a roundtable discussion on the ruling and its impact with Wisdom Cole, national director of the NAACP Youth and College Division; Janelle Wong, director of Asian American studies and a professor of American studies and government and politics at the University of Maryland; and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, founder of Futuro Media and host of the Latino USA podcast.

SNL: Fake Interpreter From Mandela Funeral Strikes Again

"Saturday Night Live" kicked off its John Goodman-helmed episode with President Obama (Jay Pharoah) lamenting the "series of unfortunate events" that happened at the memorial for Nelson Mandela.

First of all, there was that selfie with the Danish Prime Minister, then the handshake with Raul Castro ("...he told me he was Edward James Olmos,") and finally, the sign language interpreter who didn't appear to know sign language. Naturally, after mentioning him, Thamsanqa Jantjie (Kenan Thompson) appeared behind the POTUS and proceeded to "loosely" interpret the rest of the speech.

Most importantly, "SNL" reminded us that lost amongst all the hoopla were the feelings of poor Angela Merkel, she never got her selfie with Obama, even after he spied on her.

As Strikes on Syria Loom, Is U.S. Ignoring a Diplomatic Track That Could Prevent More Violence?

Britain is set to introduce a United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing military action in Syria as the United States and allies gear up for expected strikes on the Assad regime. The resolution condemns the Syrian government for allegedly using chemical weapons and authorizes "necessary measures for protecting civilians." Russia and China are expected to issue a veto, raising the prospect that a U.S.-led bombing could come through NATO. The Obama administration says military action in Syria would be aimed at responding to chemical attacks, not seeking regime change, but critics say similar claims were made at the outset of the NATO intervention in Libya. "There is no military solution," says Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies. "Extra assaults from the United States are going to make the situation worse, put Syrian civilians at greater risk, and not provide protection."

Massive Death Toll Belies Claim that Drone Strikes are only used in Cases of an "Imminent Threat"

"The Washington Post recently published a three part series on the plans of the Obama Administration to institutionalize the practice of targeted killing by unmanned drones abroad. According to previous and current Administration officials who were interviewed, the institutionalization and expansion of the drone program means that we have only reached 'the midpoint of what was once known as the global war on terrorism.' This means that the targeted killing of suspects by the United States is becoming a permanent feature of our counterterrorism strategy.

"Yet the program has thus far been conducted with virtually no oversight from Congress or any other judicial body and absolutely no due process. Congress has even been denied the right to be informed of and view the legal memos which the Administration uses as its basis to justify these killings. Despite increasing calls for transparency and the legal justification from both Members of Congress and a broad range of advocacy organizations, targeted killing is 'so routine that the Obama Administration has spent much of the past year codifying and streamlining the processes that sustain much of it.'

"The battlefield has been stretched to include nearly anywhere in the world, making it easier to justify the flouting of international law and the laws of war. But the United States is not at war with Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan. Such killings are only lawful under a very narrow set of circumstances. We cannot claim to be meeting those narrow circumstances when the number of people killed by such strikes, including innocent civilians, is estimated to exceed 3,000. This number alone demonstrates that the Administration's claims that such strikes occur only under 'imminent threat' is patently false.

"The expansion of the use of surveillance drones here in the United States also raises significant concerns about the safeguarding of privacy and what information may be collected without prior authorization. Any government or local law enforcement agency deploying such drones must ensure that the 4th amendment rights and the right to privacy of U.S. citizens are not being violated by the use of this technology.

"Congress cannot stand idly by as these actions are being taken in the name of the American people. That is why I am hosting a briefing on Friday, November 16, 2012 to discuss the implications of our drones policy here at home, and abroad."
