Canada, Britain, Germany, Ireland and Belgium have called for an investigation into the killings. The United Nations Human Rights Council has announced that it will hold a special session Friday to discuss escalating violence in Gaza. We speak with Dr. Tarek Loubani, an emergency room medical doctor, one of 19 medical personnel shot in Gaza on Monday. Loubani is an associate professor at Western University in London, Ontario. All of the people had disappeared after being detained by U.S. special forces. The base was used by a unit known as "The A-Team," which has also been linked to eight other murders in Wardak. The mystery behind the deaths is the center of a shocking new exposé which reports the disappearances and killings could amount to some of the gravest war crimes perpetrated by U.S. forces since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. We are joined by Matthieu Aikins, an award-winning investigative journalist based in Kabul who spent five months investigating the killings for his Rolling Stone article, "The A-Team Killings."

Read the Rolling Stone article

Watch part 2 of this interview:
Chevron Oil Refinery Fire in Richmond, California Forces Over 900 Residents to Hospitals tag:trueskool.com,2012-08-22:1464587:Video:131008 2012-08-22T20:18:02.695Z Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist http://trueskool.com/profile/xh51jvilojur

DemocracyNow.org - More than 900 people have sought medical treatment following a massive fire at a Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, California. Tens of thousands of area residents were ordered to stay in their homes with the windows and doors closed after a series of blasts Monday sparked blazing fires that sent huge plumes of smoke. Chevron now says the situation is under control. We talk with Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, a member of the Green Party, who is seeking a full investigation into the blaze. "We have a community that has been fighting chevron for a long time, and I'm proud to and honored to stand for that community," McLaughlin said. We're also joined by Andres Soto, the Richmond organizer for Communities for a Better Environment, an environmental justice group that has previously sued Chevron over what it says was a shoddy environmental impact report. "They refuse to sit at the table, they refuse to negotiate in good faith with the community over a wide range of issues, whether it's fair taxation or whether it's environmental safety and environmental justice," Soto said.

To watch the complete weekday independent news hour, read the transcript, download the podcast, search our vast archive, or to find more information about Democracy Now! and Amy Goodman, visit http://www.democracynow.org/

Published on Aug 8, 2012 by democracynow
