In Attack on Voting Rights, DeSantis's Election Police Arrest 20 Former Felons for Voting in Florida

Ahead of Tuesday's primary election in Florida, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis's new Office of Election Crimes and Security made its first arrests of people it alleged engaged in voter fraud in the 2020 election. Almost all those charged were people who were formerly incarcerated and mistakenly thought they were eligible to vote. People of all political affiliations "are now being dragged from their homes in handcuffs because all they ever wanted to do was participate in democracy," says Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, who spearheaded an initiative to reenfranchise people with prior felony convictions, before it was overturned by Republicans.

Radical Supreme Court Guts State Gun Laws & Right to Remain Silent Under Arrest

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a century-old New York state law that limited who can carry concealed weapons in public, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing for the 6-3 majority that the statute violated the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. The ruling vastly expands gun rights in the U.S. just weeks after mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, and represents "a revolution in Second Amendment law," says Slate senior writer Mark Joseph Stern. "It declares that any restriction on the right to self-defense is presumptively unconstitutional." In light of the Supreme Court decision, a bipartisan gun violence bill passed by the Senate is "one step forward, two steps back." Stern also discusses a separate ruling in which the court's conservative majority said a person who is arrested and not told of their right to remain silent cannot subsequently sue police for violating their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination — even if statements they give are ultimately used against them at trial. The decision could be setting the stage for the court to overturn the 1966 Miranda v. Arizona precedent altogether, Stern warns.

He also tells the story of his arrest at the Newark airport for possession of $1.4 million worth of liquid cocaine, and being sentenced to a mandatory 14 year prison sentence. He describes what led up to that moment, time spent while incarcerated, and the aftermath of eventually getting out early via an order of executive clemency from President Bush.

As the convo continues John speaks on the re-release of his album "I, John," which he wrote and recorded after his arrest, with a pending 14 year prison term fresh in his mind. He also speaks on his close friendship with legendary singer/song writer Carly Simon, who fought for John's early release, and her son Ben Taylor, also son of the great James Taylor. He talks about learning to play guitar while locked up, as well as the legendary DMX birthday round-table cypher session he participated in along with Big Pun, Canibus, and Mos Def. And in closing John reflects on how he feels about the latest chapter in his life as a husband and father of a 2 year-old baby girl.

A historic trial is underway challenging the New York City Police Department's controversial "stop-and-frisk" policy as unconstitutional and unfairly targeting people of color. Recent data shows the vast majority of the five million people stopped-and-frisked by the NYPD over the past decade are African American or Latino, with nearly 90 percent neither ticketed nor arrested. We play secretly recorded police tapes heard in the courtroom and speak to three guests: Sunita Patel, a staff attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights and co-counsel on the stop & Frisk federal class action lawsuit; Nicholas Peart, a Harlem resident who testified last month about his multiple experiences being stopped-and-frisked; and Ryan Devereaux, a journalist covering the trial for The Guardian and The Nation.
