I try to write something new about myself every time an event, show, or piece of writing requires it. Why? I’m always changing. Some things always stay the same though. I’ll start with those. I’m from Oakland, California. I was born there, lived in many of the surrounding cities. I now live in Brooklyn, NY. I’ve always loved to draw things; as a way to pass the time, a way to impress myself or someone else, a way to be noticed, a way to show someone I love them, and a way to speak about what I see. I’m fortunate that my mother, many family members, friends, and extending family pushed me to continue.

I got a large part of my initial training on my own, then in the streets of the bay area writing on walls, sketchbooks, and so many surfaces. I met many life long friends who started out as fellow spray can and marker holders. I went to college studying what I thought I wanted to do, graphic-design. I was pushed away from that into fine art and began a process of painting my views on life as it is. Life in all of its glorious beauty and horrendous oppression.

I went back to school more to continue my studies, became a father and left again. Only this time I began to work for organizations and youth. A ton of young people of all colors, shapes, and sizes. I still work with the youth. It’s hard because helping people (not destroying them) pays very little. Let’s be real, I have to eat and so does my family. I have learned so much from working with youth about myself, and how I can make effective change. Around the time I was moving towards fine art, I began working with artists who share similar views about our artwork and our communities. We formed a collective that has more than doubled in size and gone international in its work.

Well, I worked all across the Bay Area and now I’m working in New York. I’m going back to school. I’m much more focused about why I am there and what I want to get out of it. I’m starting my own business and community of artists who work on illustration and comic work with the idea that stories about us (black and brown people ) are important and sadly underrepresented. I wish to shed some light on those stories and discover what’s there to see. I hope you’ll be wrapped by este “fuerza”.
