SUMMARY:Pieces of a Dream
DESCRIPTION:In the world of jazz, commodities are fleeting. Styles com
e and go. Artists at the top of this week’s charts could be history
by the end of next month. Words like “staying power” and “longev
ity” are for anyone or anything that sticks around for more than a c
ouple\nyears.\n\nBut then there are those rare few, gifted with the ri
ght stuff, who hang in for the long haul – musical collectives that
continue to explore and evolve album after album, year after year, dec
ade after decade, eschewing fashion and fad and reaching instead for s
omething\nmuch more permanent. This is the story of Pieces of a Dream,
a contemporary jazz band that celebrated its 30th anniversary with th
e February 2006 release of Pillow Talk, their fourth album on Heads Up
.\n\nPieces of a Dream emerged out of Philadelphia’s music scene in
1976. Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassis
t Cedric Napoleon, were (and still are) managed by the drummer’s fat
her and uncle, Danny and Bill Harmon, respectively. The group based th
eir name on “Pieces of Dreams,” a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine
that the group performed.\n\nIt’s innovation and eclecticism that k
eeps Pieces of a Dream fresh and authentic in a jazz world that’s ev
er-changing. “We will always be true to ourselves and our roots,”
says Lloyd, “and at the same time try to stay in touch with the time
s.”\n\nFor more information, visit www.piecesjazz.com\n\nFor more in
