SUMMARY:Copyright Criminals w/ Amp Live (Zion-I), Steinski, The Polish
Ambassador, Kid Kameleon Joe Mousepad, Kid Kameleon and Slayers Club
 DJ's
DESCRIPTION:Slayers Club and The Hub of the JCCSF Present: Copyright C
riminals Featuring Steinski LIVE, Amp Live, The Polish Ambassador, Kid
Kameleon, LoveTechSF, Joe Mousepad and Slayers Club DJ's\n\n\nIs samp
ling recorded music to create new works a form of artistic expression
 or, quite simply, a crime? Slayers\nClub ( www.theslayersclub.com) and
The Hub of the JCCSF ( http://www.jccsf.org/arts-ideas/the-hub) prese
nt three events in one – a film screening, expert discussion panel a
nd live musical performance – all happening on Thursday, September 2
3rd at Mighty (119 Utah St, www.mighty119.com).\n\nSteve Stein, aka St
einski ( www.steinski.com), originally from Newark, New Jersey, rode t
he pulse of the New York City underground in the early 80’s and emer
ged as a cult hip-hop hero. Stein co-produced the series of records kn
own as The Lessons for the Tommy Boy label. These analog tape cut-and-
paste collages, still widely bootlegged (and wildly illegal), are gene
rally acknowledged as three of the most influential works in the world
of hip-hop and dance music production. Steinski has been cited as a d
efinitive influence by music luminaries including DJ Shadow, Cut Chemi
st and Fatboy Slim.\n\nThe night will also feature live music performa
nces by Amp Live ( www.amplivesworld.com), the Zion I producer who was
recently entangled in a legal battle over his bootlegged Radiohead re
mix work, and The Polish Ambassador ( www.polishambassador.com), who h
as been called \"the West Coast, more sophisticated version of Girl Ta
lk\".\n\nAs seen on PBS’s Independent Lens and at the Toronto Intern
ational Film Festival, Copyright Criminals takes a close look at the c
reative and legal implications of sampling music in the digital age th
rough the eyes of well-known\nartists, activists and industry insiders
. Featuring interviews with Clyde Stubblefield (“The Funky Drummer
), Chuck\nD of Public Enemy, DJ Shadow and many more.\n\nThe film wil
l be followed by an expert speakers panel including Steinski, Amp Live
, hip-hop historian, Jeff Chang ( cantstopwontstop.com), Tim Jones of
the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( www.eff.org) and entertainment la
wyer Tony Berman ( www.beat-law.com).The panel will be moderated by et
hnomusicologist Larisa Mann (aka DJ Ripley, djripley.blogspot.com).\n\
nFresh from appearances at Nightlife at the Academy of Science and Yer
ba Buena Center for the Arts is a fresh\ninteractive music technology
 workshop by LoveTech SF ( www.lovetechsf.com), including a multi-playe
r, MIDI-\ncontrolled sampler system. Think Rock Band on steroids!\n\nA
lso performing are local favorites Kid Kameleon (XLR8R Magazine, Surya
Dub), MC/DJ/producer Joe Mousepad and, of course, the Slayers Club DJ
's.\n\nLocal artist Nick Fregosi will paint live artwork outside the v
enue and b-boy collectives will perform their\nintermittently on the d
 ancefloor.\n\nDoors at 7pm\nFilm Screening at 8:30pm\nPanel Discussion
